Prisoner dies in Laxmipur jail

An elderly man, serving a 15-year sentence, passed away in Laxmipur District Jail on Friday.

The deceased, Abdur Rahim, a resident of Titar Kandi village in Chandraganj union under Sadar upazila, was convicted in a theft and extortion case. 

He was sent to jail on October 28, 2023, following his sentencing by the District and Sessions Judge on February 19 of the same year.  

According to a statement from Jail Superintendent Nazrul Islam, Abdus Rahim fell ill while bathing in the prison. He suffered a stroke and was immediately taken to Sadar Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead around 11 AM.  

Nur Mohammad Sohel, Acting Jailer of Laxmipur District Jail, said that the body is currently in the hospital morgue and it will be handed over to his family after autopsy and completion of legal formalities.
