A young man made accused in staging a suicide allegedly after killing his wife at Amtali upazila in Barguna on Friday.
The deceased, Jubayra Akhtar Jannati, 17, was daughter of a local journalist Sumon Rashid, while the accused is her husband Emon Sardar.
The incident occurred on Friday night in Palli Bidyut area of Amtali Municipality. Emon reportedly fled the scene after leaving Jannati's body at Amtali Upazila Health Complex.
According to the victim's father, Jannati was secretly married to the accused a year ago after being drawn into a relationship. Emon had been subjecting Jannati to physical abuse since their marriage, often demanding dowry and finding excuses for conflict.
On Friday afternoon, Emon allegedly cut Jannati's hair during a domestic dispute. When Jannati protested, Emon reportedly assaulted her severely, which Suman believes led to her death. Emon is then accused of hanging her body with a scarf to make it appear as a suicide, he said.
The father also alleged that his daughter was murdered and demands justice.
Doctors at Amtali Upazila Health Complex confirmed that Jannati had died before being brought to the hospital. Later, police retrieved her body and sent it for autopsy at Barguna General Hospital morgue.
In response to the allegations, Emon denied killing his wife. He admitted to cutting her hair and engaging in an argument but claimed that Jannati took her own life by hanging herself.
Amtali Police Station officer-in-charge (investigation), Amir Hossain Serniabad, confirmed that the body was sent for autopsy and an unnatural death case has been filed.
"Further legal action will be taken based on the investigation and the autopsy report," he added.
