Police detained a suspect allegedly for holding a police constable hostage for Tk 250,000 as ransom in Rajshahi city on Saturday.

However, police later rescued the victim while the main perpetrator managed to escape.
The victim, Badiuzzaman Joni, a computer operator at Rajpara Police Station in Rajshahi, was returning home on his motorcycle after duty early Friday morning. Around 3:30 AM, he was intercepted by a group of five to six men at Tooltulipara intersection. Armed with local weapons, the assailants held Joni captive and demanded ransom.

Police identified the mastermind as Md. Milon, a 35-year-old resident of the Horogram area in Rajshahi. Milon, with multiple theft and robbery cases against him, had previously been arrested in a robbery case where Joni had served as the computer operator to document the charges. Milon allegedly sought revenge, claiming significant financial loss during his bail process.

During the hostage situation, Joni contacted a friend for help, who in turn informed Joni's father. The matter was reported to Rajpara Police Station later.

Being informed, a police team quickly responded and rescued Joni after about two hours. While Milon and his associates fled the scene, one accomplice, Sanowar, was arrested.

Rajpara Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Ashraful Alam said, "Milon recently got out on bail and had been planning this act of vengeance against Joni. We acted promptly to ensure his safety."

The victim's father has filed a case naming Milon, Sanowar, and two others, along with six to seven unidentified suspects. Sanowar has been sent to jail, while efforts are underway to apprehend Milon and the remaining culprits, added the OC.
