Police have arrested a youth for allegedly killing a fishing cat at Naldanga Bazar area in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah on Saturday.
The legal proceedings under Section 34(b) of the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012, are ongoing against the arrested Jahidul Islam.
The incident came to light on December 19 when a video circulated on social media, showing the fishing cat being displayed on the back of an electric rickshaw alongside statements disrespecting freedom fighters.
After the video gained attention, Forest Department visited the area, verified the incident through discussions with locals, public representatives, and conservationists and confirmed the crime.
Officials from the department revealed that Jahidul had a history of involvement in wildlife killings. Based on the gathered evidence, a general diary (GD) was filed against him.
The Forest Department has reiterated its commitment to taking strict legal action against wildlife offenders, emphasizing the importance of protecting endangered species like the fishing cat which plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance.
