Man commits suicide over theft allegation in B'baria

A young man took his own life after reportedly being accused of stealing a mobile phone at Nabinagar upazila in Brahmanbaria district on Sunday.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning at Bitghar Madhya Para area in the upazila. 

The deceased, Abul Kalam, 34, was son of Abdur Rahim from Mirpur village in Shibpur union and had been residing in a rented house in Bitghar Madhya Para.  

According to locals, on Saturday, Kalam was working at home of one Oli Mia in Bitghar village when he was accused of stealing a mobile phone. Subsequently, he was allegedly tied up and brutally beaten at the nearby house of Jalal Mia. 

Unable to bear the humiliation, he reportedly hanged himself the following morning.  

Nabinagar Police Station officer-in-charge Abdur Razzak confirmed the incident, saying, "We recovered the body around 10 AM and sent it to the district hospital morgue for an autopsy. The cause of death will be confirmed after receiving the post-mortem report."  

Authorities are investigating whether the death was a case of suicide or homicide, added the OC.
