A youth from Dashmina upazila in Patuakhali, who lost his eyesight due to splinter injuries during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in July-August, has received a battery-operated rickshaw to sustain his livelihood.

The rickshaw was gifted on Monday at Dr. Akhtar Uddin auditorium of Patuakhali Press Club, thanks to the financial contributions of compassionate individuals.

Several reports in the contry's daily portals highlighted the struggles of the victim Saidul Islam, 25, which attrackted kind-hearted readers from Dhaka who reached out him with the rickshaw. The acting president of Patuakhali Press Club officially handed over the vehicle to Saidul.

Previously, Saidul used to earn his living by driving a battery-operated rickshaw in Dhaka. Upon receiving the rickshaw, he expressed his gratitude, saying, "I am deeply thankful to those who supported me in my time of need. Now, I can earn a livelihood again. Their compassion reaffirms the presence of humanity in society."

Saidul recalls that during the protest in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area, he was severely injured and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital by fellow protestors and locals. After a week of treatment, splinters were removed from his eyes. He later received further care at the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital, where surgery confirmed that his left eye had been permanently damaged.

Despite the overwhelming challenges, the rickshaw gift has brought Saidul a ray of hope, enabling him to rebuild his life and support his family.
