Ctg Swechchhasebak League leader held for 'shooting at students'

The incident took place at Sholoshahar 2 No Gate under Panchlaish Police Station in the city on July 16.

Panchlaish police arrested Mithun Chakraborty, president of Chattogram Metropolitan Chawkbazar Ward Swechchhasebak League, from Sultanpur area of Feni district on Sunday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Operations) Md Rais Uddin disclosed the matter at a press briefing at CMP Media Center on Monday. 

He said that on July 16 at noon, Mithun along with his other associates, carried out a shootout, cocktail blast and vandalizing in front of Chittagong Shopping Complex. He also said that pictures of Mithun Chakraborty firing indiscriminately on the students with a pistol during the organized anti-discrimination student movement in July-August were published in different media of the country, including social media.

Rais Uddin said that the arrested was a trusted associate of identified extortionists, illegal occupants of government land, tender and former councilor of Chawkbazar ward no.16 Nur Mostafa Tinu.

During primary interrogation, Mithun confessed that he attacked the students with weapons to suppress the movement," Rais Uddin said. "We have interrogated him to recover the weapons used in the movement. He is giving misleading information. We will soon launch an operation to recover the weapon," he added.

Mohammad Solaiman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Panchlaish Police Station, said Mithun Chakraborty said Mithun was produced before a court today and legal actions will be taken following court order.
