At least 20 people were injured in a violent clash between supporters of Awami League and BNP in Saltha upazila in Faridpur.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at Mazardia village in Mazardia union.
The altercation, triggered by an attack on an 85-year-old former Union Parishad chairman, escalated into a series of confrontations, resulting in several home vandilized and injuries of several individuals.
Witnesses and locals reported that the longstanding rivalry over local dominance between two influential leaders of the village—Sahiduzzaman Sahid, vice president of the Upazila Awami League, and Habibur Rahman Hamid, another vice president and a three-time former UP chairman—has fueled such conflicts for nearly two decades.
Due to the ongoing disputes and related violence, Hamid had previously left the area with his family. However, he returned on Tuesday afternoon to inspect his farmland. Upon learning of his return, supporters of Sahid reportedly attacked Hamid at his home. News of the attack spread, prompting protests from Hamid's supporters, including local BNP activists. The situation quickly escalated into a violent clash between Awami League and BNP supporters.
The hour-long violence saw at least five to six houses attacked and vandalized. Among the injured were Hamid and several individuals from both groups. Ten of the injured were admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital and Nagarkanda Upazila Health Complex.
Saltha Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Ataur Rahman stated, "We rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control and additional police forces have been deployed to ensure peace."
