A local leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) was killed in a clash between two factions of Narayanganj's Rupganj upazila BNP unit on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night around 10:30 PM near Kanchan municipal office adjacent to Chanditala Temple.
The deceased, Pavel Mia, 30, son of Idris Ali from Krishnanagar in Kanchan municipality, tried to intervene in the clash between the groups led by Bayezid, the BNP general secretary for ward no. 6, and Aminul Islam, secretary of the municipal Swechhasebak Dal, said locals.
Acting on prior animosity, members of Bayezid faction allegedly attacked Pavel. He was severely beaten and rushed to a local private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Following Pavel's death, angry locals set fire to Bayezid's residence. Firefighters later managed to bring the blaze under control.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Mehedi Islam confirmed that Pavel's body was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for an autopsy.
Authorities are working to apprehend those involved in the attack and legal proceedings are underway, added the ASP.
