A mobile court on Sunday fined a landowner Tk 1.5 lakh for illegally cutting hills, violating environmental laws at Dighinala upazila in Khagrachhari district.
The operation, conducted by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Md. Mamunur Rashid, at Sudhir Member para area of ward no. 8 under Boalkhali union on Sunday.
During the operation, Bishnu Chakraborty, a resident of the area, was fined 1.5 lakh taka under Section 15 of the Sand and Soil Management Act, 2010.
When asked about the incident, UNO Md. Mamunur Rashid stated, "Despite being aware of the prohibition on hill cutting, the landowner admitted to the violation. Consequently, he was fined tk 1.5 lakh under the Sand and Soil Management Act, 2010. Failure to pay the fine will result in one month of imprisonment."
The UNO further emphasized, "Illegal hill cutting is strictly prohibited and we will take action according to the law. Similar operations will continue in the future to prevent such activities."
