NRB Global Convention 2025 was held recently in Dhaka, graced by the presence of Mohammad Touhid Hossain, the Foreign Affairs Adviser to Bangladesh, as the chief guest. He made significant remarks regarding the country's economic recovery and the role of expatriate Bangladeshis.
The Foreign Affairs Adviser said, "Remittances sent by expatriate Bangladeshis have played a crucial role in supporting the country's economy. Since the current government took office, the tireless efforts of expatriate workers have helped stabilize the economy. However, I believe that the role of expatriate Bangladeshis should not be confined only to sending remittances. They can create employment opportunities by investing in businesses and industries, which will bring long-term benefits to the country's economy."
He further mentioned, "Using India's example, the country has benefited economically by leveraging the skills and global position of its expatriate citizens. Similarly, Bangladesh now has a 'critical mass' of expatriates who can play a significant role in the country's development."
Addressing the issue of youth unemployment, he said, "Due to a lack of sufficient employment opportunities, many young people are resorting to illegal paths to reach Europe. If expatriates invest in the country, creating opportunities in industries, technology, and services, this trend can be reduced."
He also mentioned the potential for increasing Bangladesh's participation in foreign labor markets, such as in Japan, where enhanced language and skills training can significantly improve opportunities.
A key aspect of the convention was the direct participation of high-level policymakers. Expatriate entrepreneurs were given the opportunity to present real investment challenges and opportunities directly to policymakers. Special guest Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, emphasized the importance of financial sector reforms, policy support, and easier banking systems to attract expatriate investment.
The day-long seminar featured discussions on various key topics including health, education, development, economics, information technology, and innovation. Renowned individuals from both the country and expatriate communities participated as keynote speakers and panelists. Additionally, the NRB Award was presented to recognize the significant contributions of expatriate Bangladeshis.
The founder of NRB World, Enamul Haque Enam, said, "Our goal is to create an effective and sustainable bridge between the country and the expatriate community. We are working to connect expatriates' investments and skills to the country's development."
Expatriate entrepreneurs expressed that if the government ensures policy support, transparency, and an investment-friendly environment, they would be interested in making large-scale investments in Bangladesh. The convention demonstrated that with proper planning and policy support, expatriate Bangladeshis can become a key driver in the country's economic development.
The convention was attended by expatriate entrepreneurs, industrialists, businesspeople, doctors, engineers, scientists, teachers, IT professionals, and other professionals from approximately 25 countries around the world. Representatives from Bangladeshi Chambers of Commerce and Business Councils from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Dubai, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea were also present. Notable institutions included the America-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce, Canada-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce, British-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce, UK-BCCCI, Bangladesh Business Council (Dubai), Singapore-Bangladesh Chamber, Japan-Bangladesh Chamber, Korea-Bangladesh Chamber, and Australia-Bangladesh Chamber.
