After scrutiny of nomination papers, only three out of nine candidates have been declared valid in the Jamalpur-2 (Islampur) parliamentary constituency, while the nomination papers of six candidates have been cancelled due to discrepancies and failure to comply with electoral rules.

The verification process was completed on Saturday (January 3) at the office of the District Returning Officer. Returning Officer and Jamalpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Yousuf Ali confirmed the matter.

The candidates whose nominations were declared valid are: BNP-nominated candidate Md. Sultan Mahmud Babu, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Dr. Samiul Haque Faruq and Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Sultan Mahmud.

On the other hand, the nominations of six candidates were cancelled on various grounds. Jatiya Party candidate Anwar Hossain was disqualified due to loan default.

Shawkat Hasan Mia failed to submit a final nomination after mentioning BNP affiliation. BNP nomination-deprived candidate Shariful Islam Khan Farhad was disqualified for not signing the affidavit.

Independent candidates Arnav Waresh Khan and Mir Sharif Hossain Lenin were rejected due to discrepancies in submitting the required 1 percent voter support.

Expelled Jatiya Party candidate Mostafa Al Mahmud was disqualified due to irregularities and absence during scrutiny.

However, candidates whose nominations have been cancelled will have the opportunity to file appeals until January 9.

Following the announcement, there was widespread enthusiasm among the valid candidates and their supporters. Meanwhile, the disqualified candidates said they would file appeals.

Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Yousuf Ali said that a total of nine candidates submitted nomination papers in the Jamalpur-2 (Islampur) constituency, of which three were found valid after scrutiny. He added that the rejected candidates may appeal within January 9.
