SHERPUR, BOGURA, Jan 3: Five candidates have submitted nomination papers in Bogura-5 (Sherpur-Dhunat) for the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad election.

According to affidavits filed with the Election Commission (EC), BNP-nominated candidate Alhaj Golam Mohammad Siraj stands far ahead of his rivals in terms of wealth.

Siraj declared personal cash holdings of Tk 4.94 crore, while his wife holds Tk 1.10 lakh and dependents Tk 1.86 crore. His total movable assets amount to Tk 143.10 crore. His wife's movable assets stand at Tk 47.57 crore, while dependents hold Tk 7.81 crore.

Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Alhaj Mawlana Md Dabibur Rahman reported cash of Tk 53.14 lakh, with his wife holding Tk 1.04 lakh. He also declared Tk 25.13 lakh in bank deposits. His total movable assets amount to Tk 6.19 crore, while his wife's assets stand at Tk 4.71 crore.

LDP candidate Khan Kudrate Saklayen declared Tk 5.40 lakh in cash and movable assets worth Tk 2.06 crore. Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate Mir Mahmudur Rahman Chunnu reported Tk 17.34 lakh in cash and movable assets of Tk 19.34 lakh.

Communist Party candidate Shipon Robi Das declared Tk 1 lakh in cash, with total movable assets of Tk 7.13 lakh. His wife's assets amount to Tk 3.45 lakh.

The affidavits suggest that Siraj, with his considerable wealth, may enjoy a stronger position in campaign activities compared to his rivals. However, analysts and voters note that electoral outcomes are shaped more by party policies, local acceptance, and development agendas than by financial strength alone.

Local voters said wealth is a reality in elections, but they place greater importance on candidates' policies, personal competence, and plans for the constituency. "Money makes campaigning easier, but our votes will reflect our needs," one voter remarked.
