Mahdi Hasan, Member Secretary of the Habiganj unit of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement (ADSM), has been served a show-cause notice after allegedly threatening a police officer at a local station, sparking debate over the conduct of student movement leaders.
The notice was issued on Saturday afternoon following an incident at Shayestaganj Police Station the previous day. It demands an explanation within 24 hours and bars Hasan from all organisational activities until further notice.
Controversy erupted after a video showing Hasan confronting the officer-in-charge went viral on social media. In the footage, he can be heard identifying himself as a movement leader while making threatening remarks and referencing past violent incidents.
"You have arrested our man and brought him here. You are arguing with us," Hasan said in the video, adding that the administration now consists of 'our people' following the movement's efforts to reform the government.
His tone then turned more aggressive as he mentioned past violence. "Seventeen of our people were martyred here. We burned Banichang Police Station. We burned SI Santosh," he said, before questioning the officer's 'audacity' in challenging him.
