SHARIATPUR, Jan 3: A village doctor and businessman, Khokon Chandra Das, has died after being brutally attacked in Shariatpur's Damudya upazila.
Das, who was also a mobile banking agent, succumbed to his injuries at around 8:00 a.m. on Saturday at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Shariatpur's Additional Superintendent of Police Tanvir Hossain confirmed.
According to police and local sources, on December 31, Das was returning home after closing his shop at Keurbhanga Bazar in Kaneshwar Union when three to four assailants stabbed him and robbed him of cash and his mobile phone. Recognizing the attackers, they allegedly poured petrol over his body and set him on fire.
In a desperate bid to survive, Das jumped into a nearby pond. Hearing his screams, locals rushed to the scene, forcing the attackers to flee. He was rescued in critical condition and initially taken to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital before being referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Despite multiple surgeries on Thursday afternoon, his condition worsened due to severe burns and injuries, and he died three days after the attack.
In connection with the incident, Das's father, Paresh Chandra Das, filed a case with Damudya Police Station. The accused are Sohag Khan, 27; Rabbi Molla, 21; and Palash Sardar, 25-all residents of Kaneshwar.
Additional Superintendent of Police Tanvir Hossain said, "We were informed by the hospital that he has died. We are investigating, and those responsible will be brought to justice soon."
