BGB seizes smuggled goods worth Tk 131.97cr in Jan

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled goods worth over Tk 131.97 crore during extensive anti-smuggling operations across border areas and other parts of the country in January. 

According to a BGB press release, the seized contraband included gold and silver, large quantities of garments and textiles, cosmetics, imitation jewelry, fireworks, timber, tea leaves, betel nut, coal, stone, mobile phones and accessories, household items, spices, food products, fertilizers, pesticides, fuel, chocolates, livestock, vehicles, and a stone statue.  The total value of the recovered goods was estimated at Tk 131,97,91,000, the release added.

Among the notable recoveries were 940.176 grams of gold, 14.337 kg of silver, over 28 lakh fireworks, over 41,000 kg of cumin, nearly 19,000 kg of fertilizer, 973 cows and buffaloes, and dozens of vehicles including trucks, pickups, private cars, CNGs, motorcycles, and bicycles. During the same period, BGB also recovered a significant cache of weapons. The seized arms included 14 foreign and locally made pistols, a hand grenade, 13 magazines, 185 rounds of ammunition, a mortar cell, a cocktail, and 28 other weapons.

A massive quantity of narcotics was also seized in January. The recovered drugs included over 12.32 lakh pieces of Yaba tablets, 1.730 kg of heroin, 1,156 bottles of Phensedyl, nearly 9,000 bottles of foreign liquor, marijuana weighing more than 1,929 kg, thousands of bottles of syrups, narcotic injections and tablets, bidis, cigarettes, and more than 13 lakh pieces of various medicines and tablets.
