TANGAIL, June 20: Four people, including a father and his son, died after entering an abandoned well to rescue a goat in Tangail’s Madhupur upazila on Saturday morning.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 am in Jalui village under the Telki area of Aronkhola Union.
The deceased were identified as Babul Hadima, 48, his son Neymar Mrong, 14, and their relatives Ratan Nokrek, 27, and Gabriel Nokrek, 32, all residents of Jalui village.
Madhupur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Fazlul Haque confirmed the incident.
The local and police said that Babul’s goats fell into the abandoned well on Saturday morning. Neymar Mrong was first sent down to rescue the animal. When he failed to respond, three others entered the well one after another in an attempt to save him. However, they also became unresponsive, prompting locals to inform Madhupur Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Madhupur Fire Service Sub-Officer Lovlu Torofdar said that the well was approximately 9"10 feet deep. He said the first victim died from a lack of oxygen after entering the pit to retrieve the goat, while three others subsequently entered the well to rescue him and also died. Fire Service personnel later recovered the bodies and handed them over to police.
Authorities initially suspect that toxic gas accumulation or oxygen depletion inside the well may have caused the deaths, although the exact cause will be confirmed after an investigation.
Madhupur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Zobayer Hossain and OC AKM Fazlul Haque visited the scene. Family members later requested permission from the administration to bury the bodies without autopsies.
