Sunamganj fully prepared for voting ahead of nat’l polls

All polling centres in Sunamganj district are fully prepared to conduct voting for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.

According to sources, election materials have been delivered to all centres, while district administration and election officials remain committed to ensuring a free, fair and peaceful election.

According to Sunamganj District Election Office, a total of 39 candidates submitted nomination papers for five constituencies of the district.

After initial scrutiny, 13 candidates’ nominations were rejected, leaving 26 valid candidates. Seven later regained their candidacy through appeal and eight withdrew, bringing the final number of candidates to 23.

Symbol allocation has been completed and distributed as follows: 3 in Sunamganj-1, 3 in Sunamganj-2, 7 in Sunamganj-3, 5 in Sunamganj-4 and 5 in Sunamganj-5.

Sunamganj-1 (Dharmapasha, Madhyanagar, Tahirpur, Jamalganj) has 501,530 voters with 256,179 men, 245,341 women and 10 transgender voters. Sunamganj-2 (Dirai and Shalla) has 306,048 voters, including 154,655 men, 151,392 women and 1 transgender voter.

Sunamganj-3 (Shantiganj and Jagannathpur) has 373,016 voters, including 189,243 men, 183,767 women and 6 transgender voters. Sunamganj-4 (Sadar and Bishwambharpur) has 372,185. Among them, 189,359 are men, 182,813 women and 13 transgender voters. Sunamganj-5 (Chatak and Dowarabazar) has 527,456 voters, including 270,618 men, 256,836 women and 2 transgender voters.

Sunamganj district has a total of 2,080,235 registered voters, comprising 1,060,054 men, 1,020,149 women and 32 transgender voters; 720 polling centres with 4,250 polling booths, including 3,934 permanent and 316 temporary booths.

Among the 12 upazilas, eight are located in haor (wetland) areas, where 323 centres have been classified as hard-to-reach. Over 14,000 election officers will be deployed to manage the voting process.

District Commissioner (DC) and District Returning Officer Dr Mohammad Ilias Mia said that all five constituencies are prepared for safe, orderly and transparent voting.

He also said that law enforcement personnel are actively deployed in the field, and polling centres will be equipped with adequate administrative staff, CCTV coverage and body-worn cameras.

He emphasised that every measure has been taken to ensure risk-free voting.
