Meghmollar Basu, president of a faction of the Dhaka University (DU) unit of Student Union and a key founder of the newly formed political platform Network for Peoples' Action (NPA), has returned home after receiving treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital following an apparent suicide attempt on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred when Basu reportedly consumed an overdose of sleeping pills. He was admitted to the hospital in critical condition but was discharged later in the evening after treatment. Family members said his physical condition is now stable and that he is continuing treatment at home as advised by doctors.

Tejgaon Zone police assistant commissioner Akkas Ali confirmed to the media that Basu was admitted to the hospital in the afternoon and returned home after receiving treatment.

A young man who accompanied Basu at the hospital, identifying himself as his brother but declining to provide his name, told reporters that Basu had taken sleeping pills. He said the family was initially unable to determine what prompted the incident.

Hospital sources said Basu was taken to the facility after he became unwell. No further details about the reasons behind the incident have emerged and family members and associates have not commented on what might have led to it.

Basu is a prominent student activist who played a key role in establishing NPA, which was formally launched on January 16 at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka. The platform, formed by young activists with leftist and centrist ideologies who took part in the July mass uprising, announced a 101-member central council at its launch.
