Father, son among 4 killed in clashes in Narail

Four people, including a father and his son, were killed and seven to eight others injured in a clash between rival groups in Narail Sadar upazila early Monday over alleged dominance in the area.

The deceased were identified as Khalil Sheikh, his son Tahajjud Sheikh, and Ferdous, all supporters of former union parishad chairman Ujjal Sheikh. In addition, Osikur Fakir, 36, a supporter of former chairman Khayer Molla, was also killed in the violence.

The clash occurred around 5:30am in Barokula village under Singasholpur union, confirmed Narail Sadar Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Oli Mia.

Locals said a long-standing feud had been ongoing between the families and supporters of two former Singasholpur union parishad chairmen - Khayeruzzaman Khayer Molla and Ujjal Sheikh.

According to police and family sources, shortly after sehri early Monday, a group of 50 to 60 people from Tarapur village allegedly attacked the house of Khalil Sheikh in Barokula village. The attack soon turned into a retaliatory clash. During the violence, supporters of Ujjal Sheikh reportedly set fire to six houses belonging to supporters of Khayer Molla.

Five people initially sustained critical injuries from sharp weapons. Three died on the spot and one later succumbed to injuries at hospital. The bodies have been sent to Narail Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
