Speculation rife over cop reshuffle

A major shake-up in the police administration appears imminent as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government moves to recalibrate key state institutions after returning to power. Sources say a final list of proposed changes has already reached the Prime Minister's Office, signalling that decisions may be close at hand.

Officials familiar with the process say the government's immediate priorities include rebuilding public trust, restoring the force's image, and reinforcing political neutrality. In that context, intense discussion is reportedly centred on three strategic posts: Inspector General of Police (IGP), Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), and Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed acknowledged that changes at the top tier of the police are likely, though he cautioned that administrative procedures may take time.

The current IGP, Baharul Alam, was appointed on a two-year contractual basis on November 20, 2024, during the interim government. With roughly nine months remaining in his tenure, speculation has mounted over whether his contract may be revised. Several additional IGPs - including Delwar Hossain Miah, Ali Hossain Fakir and Md. Chibgat Ullah - are being discussed as potential successors, alongside retired officer Ansar Uddin Khan Pathan.

RAB's leadership is also under review, with policymakers reportedly weighing questions of human rights, accountability and international engagement. Meanwhile, the DMP commissioner's post carries heightened significance as the capital braces for increased political activity in the early months of the new administration.

Analysts warn that while reform may be necessary, appointments perceived as overly partisan could undermine professionalism, even as maintaining the status quo risks alienating political supporters.
