Police have arrested the prime suspect in the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl, who was found with her throat slashed in a remote hilly area of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram.

The suspect, identified as Babu Sheikh, was apprehended on Tuesday afternoon.

Chattogram Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Rassel confirmed the detention.

The victim, Ira, died early Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

She had been fighting for her life since Saturday, when road construction workers discovered her lying injured with a bleeding throat inside the Sitakunda Botanical Garden and Eco Park. The workers used their own clothing to wrap her neck in an attempt to stop the bleeding before rushing her to Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex.

She was later transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors confirmed that the child had been raped before the attack.

Police said Ira's home was in Kumira, located at least five to seven kilometers from the eco park where she was found. Investigators noted that it would have been impossible for a child of her age to travel such a distance alone, suggesting that someone lured her to the remote location.

The case has drawn widespread attention and outrage across the country, with authorities treating it as a case of rape followed by attempted murder that ultimately proved fatal.
Police are continuing their investigation following the arrest of the prime suspect.
