Rooppur Plant to add 1100MW power to nat’l grid: Faqir Mahbub

Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam said on Friday that Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will add 1000 to 1100 MW of power into the national grid by December 2026.

“Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to inaugurate the commercial operations of the first unit of Rooppur plant by August 2026. Later, an International Atomic  Energy Association  (IAEA) team will inspect the plant, in accordance with the report of their visit, the plant will increase its production gradually and reach upto 1100 MW,” the minister said this at a high level roundtable titled 'Nuclear Energy: Strategy,Realities and Bangladesh’s path Forward' at Shopnodip Resort, Joynagar, Ishwardi, Pabna.

Focusing on the safety issues, the minister said, “Assurances have come from IAEA, this reactor is a 3-plus generation plant. We are establishing a nuclear plan to support our health, agriculture, food security and ensure uninterrupted power supply for the next 60 years.”

Secretary of Science and Technology Md Anwar Hossain urged all to come forward with positive and constructive criticism thus the highly sensitive project will come into operations in due time.

IAEA experts, local Members of Parliament, stakeholders, politicians, business leaders, scientists, and senior officials took part in the discussion.

IAEA expert Eric Mathet, Adviser to the Prime Minister Habibur Rahman, Salim Reza MP and Abu Taleb Mondol attended the programme among others.
