Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has requested bank account details of Abul Kalam Azad and Tofazzal Hossain Miah, two former principal secretaries to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in connection with an investigation into their financial transactions.

According to sources, BFIU recently sent letters to banks requesting information about their bank accounts, debit or credit cards and any other types of financial transactions.

The letters also included their personal details such as parents’ names, dates of birth and national identity card numbers to help banks identify any accounts linked to them.

Banks have been asked to submit the relevant information to BFIU if such accounts or transactions are found.

Abul Kalam Azad was arrested by police on October 5, 2024. During his career, he served as secretary of Economic Relations Division under Ministry of Finance, secretary of Power Division under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, secretary at Prime Minister’s Office and later as principal secretary to the prime minister.

He also served as the chief coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at Prime Minister’s Office.

Tofazzal Hossain Miah is also a former Bangladesh Civil Service officer. Earlier, he served as private secretary-1 to the prime minister, as well as director general and secretary at Prime Minister’s Office.

He served as senior secretary at Prime Minister’s Office from January 2020 to December 2022 and assumed the role of principal secretary to the prime minister on December 8, 2022.
