
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has officially launched its women's wing, Jatiya Narishakti, on the eve of International Women's Day.
Monira Sharmin has been appointed convener, Dr Mahmuda Alam Mitu as member secretary, and Nusrat Tabassum as the chief organizer, party officials announced at the launch held at the Sagar-Runi Auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity on Sunday.
During the launching, Dhaka-11 MP and NCP convener Nahid Islam said women played a crucial role in the July mass uprising and called for recognizing and amplifying their voices nationwide.
"Whether women are active in politics or not, we must listen to their voices and ensure their safety while striving to change the country and build a society free from discrimination," he said.
Highlighting challenges, Nahid Islam noted the absence of women from mainstream politics despite their participation during the July Movement. He also condemned the rise of online harassment and cyberbullying, recalling the tragic suicide of a female activist due to cyber harassment. "If such pressure exists in Dhaka, the situation outside is even worse," he added.
Warning against potential post-election violence targeting women, he urged the government to take action, emphasizing, "Violence against women often spikes with power shifts. Whoever the culprit is, we will ensure justice is served."
The launch was attended by former Fisheries and Livestock Advisor of the caretaker government Farida Akhtar and senior NCP leaders, reflecting the party's commitment to enhancing womesssn's participation in politics and addressing systemic violence against them.
