A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Apple Mahmud on a three-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Shahbagh Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the order after the investigation officer sought a seven-day remand.
The accused was produced before the court, but no lawyer appeared on his behalf.
Police arrested Apple Mahmud on Friday morning from Golap Shah Mazar area in Gulistan. He was sent to jail the following day.
According to the case statement, around 6:45 AM on Friday, 20 to 25 activists of the activities banned Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League gathered near a mosque gate adjacent to Golap Shah Mazar and chanted provocative slogans.
Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid in the area. Apple Mahmud was arrested while attempting to flee, while the others managed to escape.
During preliminary interrogation, police said the group had assembled under instructions from fugitive suspects and received financial support to carry out acts of sabotage and spread propaganda against the government.
The case was filed on Saturday by Shahbagh Police Station sub-inspector Md Toufiq Hasan under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
