56,696 families in Joypurhat to receive VGF rice ahead of Eid

JOYPURHAT, Mar 13: A total of 56,696 poor, helpless and underprivileged families in Joypurhat district are receiving humanitarian food assistance in the form of 10 kilograms of rice each under the Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme ahead of the holy festival of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The distribution of rice allocated under a special government programme was formally inaugurated on Friday morning on the Joypurhat municipality premises. The initiative aims to support low-income families during the upcoming Eid celebration.

The programme was inaugurated by Uttam Kumar Ray, Deputy Director of the Local Government Division and Administrator of Joypurhat Municipality. Rice was distributed among poor, helpless and disadvantaged residents from nine wards of the municipality during the event.

Among others present were Joypurhat Municipality Chief Executive Officer Ashik Khan, Executive Engineer Abu Zafar Md Reza, Social Development Officer Md Hasanuzzaman, Administrative Officer Abdul Hashem and Sub-Assistant Engineer Md Mizanur Rahman.

According to district Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Abdul Karim, the rice distribution is being carried out under the humanitarian assistance programme for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

He said a total of 566.960 tonnes of rice have been allocated for distribution among 56,696 families across the district, with each family receiving 10 kilograms.

The authorities have instructed the relevant departments to complete the distribution process by March 15, he added.

The district Relief and Rehabilitation Department also said that 351.110 metric tonnes of rice have been allocated for distribution among 35,111 families in five upazilas of the district.

In addition, another 215.850 tonnes of rice have been allocated for 21,585 families living in five municipalities of the district.

Officials said the initiative is intended to ensure that low-income households can celebrate Eid with some relief amid ongoing economic pressures.
