Two people were killed after a timber-laden truck plunged into a deep gorge in Lama upazila of Bandarban on Thursday night.

The accident occurred at Yangcha turning point on the Fasiakhali–Lama road.

The deceased were identified as Md Alamgir, 35, the truck driver and son of Abdul Kader from Yangcha Kalirjhirri area, and Anwar Hossain, 45, son of Mohammad Hossain from the Poang Bari area.

Another person, identified as Putia from Thandajhiri area, was injured in the incident.

Confirming the matter, Lama Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Muhammad Shahjahan Kamal said the accident took place around 8 PM when the truck, loaded with timber, was travelling towards Yangcha from Bonpur area of Fasiakhali.

According to local sources, the driver lost control of the vehicle at Yangcha turning point, causing the truck to plunge nearly 200 feet into a gorge.

Locals rescued Alamgir and Anwar with critical injuries and rushed them to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where doctors on duty declared them dead.

The OC said the bodies were handed over to the victims’ families on Friday morning after an inquest, as no formal complaint had been filed.

An unnatural death case has been recorded and further legal action will be taken following an investigation, added the OC.
