
RAMGATI, LAXMIPUR, Mar 14: Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie on Saturday visited erosion-prone areas along the Meghna River and inspected the progress of ongoing riverbank protection work in Ramgati Upazila of Laxmipur.
The minister carried out the inspection around noon in the Asalpara area of Char Alexander Union, where erosion by the Meghna has long threatened nearby settlements and infrastructure.
During the visit, he reviewed the progress of the Meghna riverbank protection embankment being constructed under the supervision of the Bangladesh Army. The project includes a 4.5-kilometre protective embankment near the Bhadderhat launch ghat and Ramgati Upazila Health Complex.
Laxmipur-4 (Ramgati-Komolnagar) MP and Chief Whip of Parliament ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizan and Laxmipur-1 (Ramganj) MP Shahadat Hossain Selim accompanied the minister during the inspection.
The minister also visited several other vulnerable points along the river, including Kor-er Bari Mor in Borokheri Union and areas near the Boyarchar bridge in Chargazi Union, where erosion and embankment work are underway. He later inspected the sluice gate area in Char Algi union.
Officials briefed the minister on the progress of the work and the ongoing efforts to protect riverbank communities from further erosion.
Among others present during the visit were Ramgati Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nilufa Yasmin Nipa and Laxmipur Water Development Board official Nahid Uz Zaman.
