Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, passengers are reportedly travelling without major troubles as fixed fares for public transport are in effect across the country, including the capital, said Minister for Road Transport, Bridges, Railways and Shipping Sheikh Rabiul Alam.
Visiting the Gabtoli Bus Terminal on Wednesday, he assured that buses are departing on schedule, fares are being observed, and immediate action is taken if any irregularities are reported.
Addressing allegations of overcharging, Sheikh Rabiul Alam said that authorities had imposed a fine of Tk 10,000 for charging an additional Tk 100 on Nabinagar and Bypass routes and had also taken action against some transporters on Chittagong Road. He added, "Everyone is charging the prescribed fare. Rather, one or two transports are charging Tk 20 to Tk 30 less than the prescribed fare, which is comfortable for the passengers." Charts displaying the fixed fares have been posted at terminals, and passengers can report any violations to the police control room or law enforcement teams present at key locations.
The minister highlighted that a police control room, vigilance team and RAB units are actively monitoring transport terminals including Gabtoli to safeguard passengers. He emphasised that no complaints of harassment or overcharging had been received so far, and traffic is generally moving smoothly. "Although a slight traffic jam occurred in Chandra in the morning, it was quickly brought under control. Currently, traffic is moving in a normal and comfortable environment on all routes," he said.
Regarding the fuel situation, Sheikh Rabiul Alam confirmed that adequate supply has been ensured for public transport from 11 pm on March 15 and insisted there is no shortage anywhere. He added, "Even then, if anyone faces any problem, they can inform our helpline 16107 or the police control room." He also noted that statistics indicate around 32,000 more vehicles crossed the Jamuna Bridge yesterday than usual, reflecting the increased pressure of the Eid journey.
The minister warned against illegal bus counters, stating that action will be taken after Eid and monitoring will be strengthened. He urged bus owners to operate only from designated terminals and confirmed that authorities, law enforcement, bus owners and labour organisations are coordinating to ensure a smooth journey. "We have kept a team ready round the clock. We have been able to quickly bring any irregularities under control," he said.
Following the press briefing, Sheikh Rabiul Alam inaugurated the BRTC Eid Special Service 2026 at the Gabtoli bus depot and later inspected the Ashulia Elevated Expressway, reinforcing the government's commitment to safe, timely and regulated transport services during the holiday period.
