State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Wednesday urged Singapore to increase employment opportunities for both skilled and semi-skilled Bangladeshi workers, highlighting Bangladesh’s focus on job creation and vocational training.

The discussion took place during a courtesy call by Singapore’s Chargé d’Affaires Mitchel Lee at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka.

The envoy congratulated the state minister on her appointment, while Shama Obaed Islam reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to strengthening the long-standing friendly ties between the two countries.

Singapore highlighted ongoing bilateral engagements and strong people-to-people connections, noting the positive reputation of Bangladeshi workers in the country and emerging opportunities in major infrastructure projects, including the new terminal at Changi Airport.

The envoy also expressed interest in concluding the Bangladesh"Singapore Free Trade Agreement (BSFTA) soon and sought continued cooperation on the Bay Terminal project, with Bangladesh assuring full support through coordination with relevant agencies.

Both sides discussed enhancing collaboration in ICT, digital governance and capacity building, as well as exploring potential partnerships in renewable energy and waste-to-energy initiatives.

The state minister also encouraged greater Singaporean investment in Bangladesh and emphasized the importance of reducing trade imbalances by promoting Bangladeshi exports, including agro-products, jute, ceramics and leather goods.

The meeting also highlighted the exchange of business delegations to strengthen targeted engagement and welcomed the prospect of holding the next Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in Dhaka later this year. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations for mutual benefit.
