Seasonal influenza grips Nageshwari households

NAGESHWARI, KURIGRAM,  Apr 4: A wave of cold, cough and fever has swept through households in Nageshwari Upazila of Kurigram, triggered by sudden changes in weather.

Residents say almost every family has at least one member suffering from influenza-like symptoms, with children and the elderly worst affected.

The unusual pattern began in late March when continuous rain and gusty winds brought a chill reminiscent of winter. Just as people were putting away blankets and preparing for summer heat, intermittent showers returned around Eid-ul-Fitr, followed by hot, humid days. The abrupt shifts left many residents vulnerable to respiratory illness.

Patients complain of runny nose, sneezing, body aches, headaches, persistent cough and high fever. Many are too weak to carry out daily activities. While some have sought treatment at the upazila health complex, most are relying on home-based care after consulting doctors at outdoor facilities.

A visit to several villages revealed widespread illness. In Poyradanga, residents including Mojibur Rahman, 55, Jugol Chandra, 27, and Baidyanath Roy, 35,  were down with fever. In Telipara, Abdul Kader, 45 and Nurun Nabi, 28, were similarly affected. In Bania Para, Narayan Chandra, 48,  and Zakaria Mia, 55,  reported prolonged cough and weakness. Locals said the illness has spread rapidly across communities.

Dr R. Rafi Tamjid, Resident Medical Officer at Nageshwari Upazila Health Complex, identified the illness as influenza virus. "It spreads easily through air, sneezing and coughing. The prevalence is usually high from March to September," he explained. "Every day, numerous patients from children to the elderly are coming to the hospital. We are providing treatment, but there is no reason to panic."

He advised patients to take paracetamol for fever, drink plenty of fluids including water and coconut water, and consume nutritious food to regain strength. "The illness may last five to seven days. With proper rest and care, recovery is expected," he added.

Health officials stressed that while the outbreak is widespread, it is seasonal and manageable. They urged residents not to be alarmed but to maintain hygiene, avoid close contact when sick, and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen.
