Mirza Fakhrul accuses some parties of misleading public on July reforms

BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development & Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused certain political groups of misleading the public by claiming that BNP does not support the July reform agenda, asserting that his party has long stood for democratic values and political freedom in the country.

He made the remarks on Saturday while speaking as the chief guest at a freedom fighters’ rally held ate Teliyapara Memorial of Madhabpur upazila in Habiganj district, marking Historic Teliyapara Day on April 4.

Fakhrul said that after 1975, it was BNP that led the struggle against one-party rule imposed on the people. 

He credited Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman with introducing a multi-party democratic system and ensuring freedom of speech and press in the country.

He also alleged that some groups are undermining country’s independence history on the global stage, accusing previous Awami League government under Sheikh Hasina of sidelining key figures of Liberation War. 

Citing an example, he said that General MAG Osmani, the commander-in-chief during the war, is not adequately known among the younger generation, which he described as unfortunate. 

According to him, BNP acknowledges the contributions of all individuals involved in the independence struggle.

Addressing party leaders and activists, Fakhrul said BNP aims to lead the country towards political and economic stability after securing a strong electoral mandate. 

He warned that individuals engaging in misconduct in the party’s name would not be tolerated, echoing party chairman Tarique Rahman’s stance on maintaining discipline.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Liberation War Affairs Minister Azam Khan, State Minister Ishraque Hossain, Whip GK Gaus, Members of Parliament Syed Mohammad Faisal and Shakhawat Hasan (Jibon) and International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam. 

The program began at 11:00 AM and included discussions, reminiscences from freedom fighters, cultural performances and motivational sessions for youth.

Historic Teliyapara Day holds significant importance in Bangladesh’s Liberation War history. On this day, the country was divided into 11 sectors during a secret meeting at a tea garden bungalow in Teliyapara. 

Key military formations such as S Force and Z Force were established and strategic decisions were made regarding both military operations and the formation of a political government. 

The meeting was led by General MAG Osmani and attended by 27 senior military officers, along with representatives from India.
