The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has announced an ambitious plan to plant 300,000 trees across its jurisdiction over the next five years. The announcement was made by DSCC Administrator and freedom fighter Md Abdus Salam on Friday morning.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a tree plantation programme held at the residential area of the University of Dhaka. The event was organised with the support of Srijoni Bangladesh. Abdus Salam emphasised the vital role of trees in sustaining life.

"There is no alternative to tree plantation for saving lives. Therefore, the Prime Minister's nationwide tree plantation initiative must be transformed into a mass movement," he said.

He further noted that, in alignment with the Prime Minister's programme, DSCC has adopted a plan to plant a total of 300,000 trees between 2026 and 2030, with an average of 60,000 saplings to be planted each year. To achieve this target, the corporation has taken the initiative to establish a modern nursery under its own management.

In addition, DSCC will implement a 'Zero Soil' project in collaboration with the Forest Department. This initiative aims to green road medians and traffic islands by covering them with grass and trees, thereby enhancing the city's environmental sustainability.
