
NAOGAON, Apr 18: The re-excavation work of two canals in Sadar Upazila of the district has been inaugurated at a cost of Tk 1.60 crore.
On Saturday, Sadar Constituency MP Zahidul Islam Dhalu inaugurated the programme by cutting the canal soil with a spade after unveiling a plaque at Hamra Beel in Hasaigari Union of the upazila. He then spoke as chief guest at a meeting organised there.
The concerned people said that the two canals are being excavated under the EGPP of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief as part of the implementation of the Prime Minister's election manifesto.
The cost of excavating a 2,400-metre canal from Hamra Beel in Hasaigari Union to Krishnapur has been estimated at Tk 90 lakh. In addition, the cost of excavating another 1,200-metre canal from Shyampur to Kalupara Beel via Haripur in Baktarpur Union has been estimated at Tk 70 lakh.
After the inauguration, MP Zahidul Islam Dhalu said, "About 55 years ago, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman started a canal excavation programme which brought about a green revolution in the country. After a long time, his worthy son Tarique Rahman has taken the initiative to dig 20,000-kilometre canals."
He also said that if the project is implemented in Sadar Upazila, farmers will get rid of water-logging during the rainy season and crop production will increase. In addition, the demand for domestic fish will be met.
At that time, Naogaon District BNP Organising Secretary Khairul Alam Golden, District BNP former member secretary Bayezid Hossain Palash, District BNP former joint convener Aminul Islam Belal, District Jubo Dal Convener Masud Haider Tipu, District Swechchhasebak Dal Convener Shafiul Azam Tutul, Sadar Upazila Project Implementation Officer Mahbubur Rahman, District Chhatra Dal General Secretary Mamun Islam Bin Doha and others were present.
