The curtain rose on the five-day Independence and National Day Volleyball Tournament with a flourish at the Shaheed Noor Hossain National Volleyball Stadium in Paltan on Tuesday as the nation's premier sides locked horns under floodlights in a celebration of sport and spirit.

Organised by the Bangladesh Volleyball Federation and backed by Radiant Pharmaceuticals Limited, the tournament began with a series of commanding performances, setting an early tone of authority and ambition.

On the opening day, Bangladesh Air Force stamped their class with a resounding straight-sets victory over Bangladesh Jail, cruising through 25-5, 25-13, 25-14. It was a one-sided affair, where precision, power, and tactical discipline combined seamlessly, much like a well-drilled unit executing a flawless game plan.

In a contest that ebbed and flowed like a gripping five-set thriller, Bangladesh Ansar and VDP rallied from behind to edge past Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence. After conceding the first two sets 22-25 and 16-25, Ansar mounted a spirited comeback, clinching the next three sets 25-18, 25-20, 15-13, showcasing resilience and nerves of steel when it mattered most.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Army delivered a composed performance to defeat Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP) in straight sets, 25-17, 25-14, 28-26. The final set proved a stern test, but the Army side held their nerve to seal the tie in commanding fashion.

The tournament was formally inaugurated by Lieutenant General (Retd.) Sina Ibn Jamali, Managing Director of Radiant Pharmaceuticals Limited and former President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. The opening ceremony was presided over by Federation Vice-President Masudul Alam, with General Secretary (Acting) Abdul Mumin Saddam and Senior Sports Organising Committee Secretary Sohel Rana Lincoln also in attendance.

As the competition gathers pace, the early exchanges suggest a fiercely contested tournament lies ahead, where momentum, much like in football's midfield battles, will be the currency of success.
