Mushfiqur sees Australia on the back foot

Bangladesh may have left Darwin with the biggest result of the series, but Mushfiqur Rahim believes the psychological advantage could now be moving even further towards the Tigers.

The nine-wicket victory in the opening Test has put Australia in an unfamiliar position. They are no longer entering the next match with the expectation of controlling the series. Instead, they must find a way to recover quickly or risk losing the contest altogether.

For Bangladesh, the situation is almost the opposite.

They have arrived in Mackay with confidence, momentum and the knowledge that their cricket was good enough to beat Australia comprehensively in the first Test.

Mushfiqur's assessment comes at a significant moment. Australia have already been forced to reconsider their batting combination following the Darwin defeat. Jake Weatherald has been left out of the squad for the second Test, while Matt Renshaw has been brought back into the group.

The changes underline the problems Australia faced in Darwin.

Their batting never managed to establish sustained control, while Bangladesh repeatedly found ways to turn pressure into wickets. Australia were dismissed for 198 in the first innings and 284 in the second, leaving Bangladesh with a straightforward chase.

The Tigers' performance was equally important with the bat.

After their alarming 54-run collapse in the warm-up match, Bangladesh responded with 426 in the Test. Tanzid Hasan's century provided the headline contribution, while the middle order gave the innings the stability it had lacked during the preparation match.

Hasan Mahmud then produced one of the outstanding performances of the Test, claiming nine wickets across the two innings. Mehedi Hasan Miraz also played a major role with both bat and ball.
That balance is what Bangladesh will need to carry into Mackay.

Mushfiqur's message, rather than suggesting Bangladesh should become complacent, points towards the need to recognise the opportunity without losing focus. Australia will come back with a different plan, and Bangladesh will have to deal with a team playing under considerable pressure.

The equation makes the second Test particularly intriguing.

Australia must win to keep the series alive. Bangladesh, meanwhile, need only avoid defeat to secure a historic series victory.

That does not mean the Tigers can afford to play simply for a draw. Their Darwin performance has raised expectations within the team, and another strong display could turn an extraordinary Test victory into an achievement of much greater significance.

Australia are now fighting to stay alive in the series. Bangladesh are fighting for history. Mackay will decide which side handles that pressure better.
