Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has sought to reassure newspaper owners that his government does not intend to create hostility with journalists or news organisations.
The remarks came during a meeting with leaders of the Newspapers Owners' Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, NOAB President Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, said: "The most important thing is that we told the prime minister that he is walking on the path of liberal democracy, which is positive for Bangladesh. As newspapers and as media, we will support that path if it continues."
"On press freedom, he said , 'I do not want to make anyone hostile'. This is a very good statement. No head of state or government has said this before," said Matiur, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Manab Zamin.
The NOAB president noted that the newspaper industry is currently facing severe economic pressure, making its survival a major challenge.
"We also told him that he himself comes from this industry. He has long been associated with a newspaper (Dinkal) and understands its challenges. He listened and spoke to us sincerely," he said.
The Manab Zamin editor said the Prime Minister agreed in principle with their demands, though implementation may take time.
He added that they reminded the prime minister of the actions of previous governments.
"He said we will not go down that path. We found that very reassuring. The meeting was very useful and effective."
On specific demands, NOAB leaders raised concerns over harassment of journalists, including those arrested or facing cases.
"He said the government would look into whether anyone is in jail without cause and whether bail can be granted. He will examine the issue carefully," the NOAB president said.
He also said the prime minister agreed to hold meetings with media owners at least once every three months.
