Staff members at Dhaka University (DU) besieged the Registrar and issued a six-point ultimatum, demanding that 187 pending promotions be completed by May 15 and the retirement age be raised to 62.

The demonstration was organised by Karmachari Oikya Parishad, a platform of four staff unions at DU, who submitted a written list of demands to Registrar Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmad after surrounding his office.

Demands include completing the syndicate-approved promotions of 187 assistant registrars and equivalent staff to deputy registrar or equivalent posts by May 15, immediately inviting fresh promotion applications for 2025 from four staff associations, raising the retirement age to 62 for all categories of employees, revising the 2020 promotion policy in consultation with union leaders, reopening the administrative building's canteen, and ensuring continued access to higher education for university staff.

Staff representatives warned that if the Registrar fails to act, they will hold daily protest rallies from 11am to 12pm until May 3. They said the administration would be held responsible for any deterioration of the situation and added they would submit memoranda to the Vice-Chancellor, both Pro-Vice-Chancellors, the Treasurer, and the Proctor.
