Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has begun issuing automated notices to vehicle owners and drivers for traffic violations detected through CCTV footage and still images across the capital, warning that failure to respond and pay fines could lead to summonses or arrest warrants.
The move was announced in a public notice signed by Acting DMP Commissioner Md. Sarwar on Sunday as part of efforts to ease congestion, modernize traffic management and improve civic services in Dhaka.
Under the system, the traffic division is using video footage and photographs collected from surveillance cameras to identify vehicles without registration or fitness certificates, as well as cases involving illegal parking and other traffic offences that obstruct roads.
Notices are being generated through an e-traffic prosecution system and sent by registered mail to the addresses of vehicle owners and drivers. Recipients are required to appear at DMP headquarters or the relevant traffic division and settle fines under the Road Transport Act through banks or mobile financial services.
Police said legal action will now move to the next stage if those notified fail to appear, with special metropolitan magistrates authorized to issue summonses or arrest warrants.
DMP also cautioned the public against making any unofficial payments or sharing personal information outside the formal process. Anyone receiving suspicious messages demanding money in the name of CCTV-based traffic cases has been urged to contact the nearest police station or traffic division immediately.
The police said they have recently installed advanced CCTV cameras, including AI-enabled systems, at major traffic signals and key intersections in the capital.
The new digital enforcement system is already being used to prosecute offences such as running red lights, crossing stop lines, driving on the wrong side of the road, picking up passengers indiscriminately and causing obstruction, illegal parking and blocking the left lane.
