Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon on Thursday said the government is keen to allocate up to 5 per cent (pc) of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) for "radical changes" and qualitative improvement through necessary reforms in the education sector.

"The allocation for education will increase in the next budget. We will gradually increase it to 5pc of GDP," the minister said while addressing a UNICEF-organised seminar unveiling a research report at Hotel Sheraton in Banani.

The seminar "Bringing Learning to Life: Innovations in Training, Teaching, Learning and Student Engagement," was attended by educators, policymakers and UNICEF officials.

The minister came up with the commitment of his government about educational sector development saying, "The government is committed to ensuring the "necessary investment" in education to develop a skilled future generation - capable of meeting national and global challenges".

Prime Minister's Adviser on Education and Primary and Mass Education Dr Mahdi Amin, who attended the programme as a special guest, stressed the need to restore the dignity and attractiveness of the teaching profession.

"The status and respect of the teaching profession in society and the state should be raised to such a level that talented youth choose this profession as their first choice," he said.

Highlighting regional disparities in the education sector, Mahdi Amin said the existing gap between urban and rural educational institutions must be reduced to ensure equal opportunities for all students.

He further emphasised the need for inclusive and quality-based education reforms aimed at strengthening student engagement, modernising teaching methods, and ensuring equitable access to learning opportunities across the country.
