Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit Dhaka University (DU) on Tuesday, marking his first visit to the campus as head of government since assuming office after the 13th national parliamentary election held in February.

He will attend a day-long workshop titled ‘Transforming Higher Education in Bangladesh: Roadmap to Sustainable Excellence’ as the chief guest at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium.

The programme is being organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Tarique Rahman’s last visit to the university campus was on December 27 last year, when he paid respects at the grave of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi, former spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, at the university’s central mosque premises.

Earlier on December 25, he returned to the country after spending 17 years in exile.

Tarique Rahman was admitted to the Law Department of Dhaka University in the 1985-86 academic session before later moving to the International Relations Department. He was also a resident student of Salimullah Muslim (SM) Hall.

However, he could not complete his studies at the university due to the political unrest and prolonged academic disruptions during the Ershad regime.

Tuesday’s visit will be his first official appearance at Dhaka University since becoming prime minister.
