A murder case has been filed against a man accused of slaughtering five members of his family, including his wife and three daughters, in Gazipur’s Kapasia upazila.

Police said the case was lodged on Saturday evening with Kapasia Police Station, naming the prime suspect as Md. Forkan Mia, 40, who remains on the run.

Another three to four unidentified individuals were also made accused in the case.

The complaint was filed around 7:30pm by Md. Sahadat Molla, father of victim Sharmin Khanam.

The gruesome killings took place on Friday night at a rented house in the Rautkona area of Kapasia. Police recovered the bodies on Saturday and sent them to the morgue.

The victims were identified as Sharmin Khanam, 35, wife of Forkan Mia; their three daughters " Mim Khanam, 14, Umme Habiba alias Maria, 8, and Faria, 2 " and Sharmin’s younger brother Rasul Mia, 18.

According to police and local residents, Forkan and Sharmin were married around 16 years ago. The family had been living in a rented house owned by Monir Hossain in Kapasia’s Rautkona area, while Forkan worked as a private car driver.

Investigators said Forkan allegedly mixed sedatives with food before feeding his wife, children and brother-in-law on Friday night. Later, deep into the night, he allegedly tied up his wife near a window grille and killed her with a sharp weapon by slitting her throat and hacking her. He then allegedly killed the three sleeping daughters and his brother-in-law in the same manner before fleeing the scene.

Police said the suspect left behind a handwritten “complaint letter” on the bodies. In the note, Forkan alleged that his wife had extramarital affairs with several men and accused his in-laws of misappropriating Tk 1 million from him after purchasing land in their names. He also claimed that his wife and in-laws assaulted him on May 3 after tying his hands and feet with rope.

However, officials said the letter bore no signature and no such complaint had ever been filed with Gopalganj Sadar Police Station.

Kapasia Police Station officer-in-charge Shahinur Alam said police are investigating the incident and trying to arrest the fugitive suspect.
