Disaster Management and Relief Minister Principal Asadul Habib Dulu has said the government has intensified diplomatic efforts to begin implementation of the Teesta Master Plan.

He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to visit China soon and the Teesta Master Plan may be discussed during the visit as part of ongoing bilateral engagements.

He made these remarks while inaugurating a job fair for recruitment of one thousand workers under a private organisation at Lalmonirhat District Stadium on Monday morning.

Speaking at the programme, Dulu said the government had already started working to fulfil its electoral commitment of generating large-scale employment opportunities across the country.

He said the government aims to create jobs for one crore people over the next five years through both public and private sector initiatives.

Referring to the Teesta Master Plan, Dulu said the government has been maintaining communication with different countries regarding financial and technical assistance for the project.

He added that Bangladesh recently requested China to support the project during the foreign minister’s recent visit to Beijing.

The adviser also expressed optimism that the prime minister’s upcoming China visit would help accelerate discussions over the implementation of the Teesta Master Plan.

Mentioning the long-standing public demand for the project, Dulu said people of the greater Rangpur region have long been raising their voices for the protection and proper management of the Teesta River.

District administration officials, police officials, representatives of private organisations and local BNP leaders were present at the programme.
