The police in Jamalpur arrested two persons on the allegation of attempting to collect Tk 25 lakh from a job seeker by promising to ensure his recruitment as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in the police.

The arrested are Shariful Islam Shishir of Mahmudpur area in Melandah upazila of the district, and Rakibul Islam Rakib of Gangahati area under Ataikula upazila in Pabna.

A press release of Jamalpur police confirmed the matter on Saturday afternoon.

A man from Madarganj upazila had recently appeared in the ongoing ASI recruitment examination. He was approached by the duo. They assured the candidate’s family that they could guarantee his appointment as an ASI in exchange for Tk 25 lakh, the press release said.

As part of the deal, the suspects reportedly took a written non-judicial stamp agreement and a blank cheque from the family.
A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police caught the duo red-handed while they were exchanging the handwritten stamp documents and cheque on Friday night, the release added.

The police said six non-judicial stamps worth Tk 100 each and a blank cheque of Social Islami Bank were recovered from their possession.

Rakib, originally from Pabna’s Ataikula upazila, was living in a rented house near the PTI Intersection in Jamalpur town.

Police launched the operation after the victim’s guardian became suspicious and informed law enforcement authorities in this connection.
Jamalpur Superintendent of Police Farhana Yasmin said there is no scope for irregularities in police recruitment.
