College student drowns in Meghna river

A college student drowned in the Meghna River of Narsingdi while bathing with his classmates on Monday. 

Divers from Fire Service and Civil Defence recovered his body four hours after he went missing.

The deceased was identified as Mahir Shahriar, a first-year student at BAF Shaheen College in Dhaka and the son of Zahirul Islam from the Mirpur area of the capital.

According to Mahir’s classmate, Wali, a group of approximately 40 to 50 students from various Dhaka institutions including BAF Shaheen College and Adamjee Cantonment College traveled to Nagariakandi area of Narsingdi by train on Monday morning. 

While bathing in the Meghna River, three students, including Mahir, were swept away by a strong current. They managed to rescue two of them, Mahir, disappeared underwater.

Locals notified the authorities after failing to locate him. A specialized diving team was dispatched from Dhaka to conduct the search operation. 

Motalib Hossain, divisional leader of Fire Service diving team, stated that they received the report around 1:15 PM and began the search at 3:00 PM.

Following a 30-minute effort, Mahir’s body was located on the riverbed, approximately 20 to 30 yards from where he initially went missing, he added.
