SHARIATPUR, May 11: Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Shaikh Rabiul Alam, MP, has said that the feasibility study of the Padma Bridge and the alignment at the Mawa-end were done during the Khaleda Zia government. Vast corruption in the name of the Megha project took place during the last government's tenure.

He made the comments while speaking to the Shariatpur Zila Parishad Administrator and the Deputy Commissioner (DC). Everyone had the same complaint: development has not touched Shariatpur in the last 18 years, he further said.

He added that they knew there had been extensive development in Greater Faridpur, especially Shariatpur, Madaripur, Gopalganj and Faridpur. But now it seems to them that the roads have become useless and unfit for movement. That is, corruption has taken place in the name of development in this area, and money has been wasted. Even after a long time, the construction of a road from Naodoba to Shariatpur Sadar has not been completed; it has been partially built. The minister promised to complete this road in a very short time. He also promised to build a railway station in the Shariatpur section.

The minister said these things at a rally held at 12 noon on Monday after the inauguration of the tree plantation programme of the Bridge Division and the laying of the foundation stone of the Padma Bridge Museum construction work under the tree plantation programme announced by the Prime Minister at the Jajira-end of the Padma Bridge.

State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Md. Rajib Ahsan, MP, Sayeed Ahmed, MP, and Administrator of Shariatpur Zilla Parishad Sardar AKM Nasir Uddin spoke as special guests at the assembly held under the chairmanship of Secretary of the Ministry of Bridges Mohammad Abdur Rouf. DC Tahsina Begum and other officials of the administration were present.
