Media a key pillar of modern state system: Info minister

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan on Wednesday said the media plays a vital role in ensuring accountability of other pillars of the state and stressed the need for a participatory process in forming a Media Commission.

He made these remarks while addressing a seminar organised by UK International Development and BBC Media Action at a hotel in Dhaka.

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Information and Broadcasting Dr Zahed Ur Rahman was present at the event.

The minister said all discussions, recommendations and documents prepared so far regarding the proposed media commission would be considered important elements for future actions.

“To move the process forward, a consultative committee will be formed. Based on its recommendations, a final proposal will be prepared for the government,” he said.

Swapan said the issue was also discussed recently in a meeting between the head of government and representatives of media owners and editors.

He added that discussions with all relevant stakeholders would continue even after the formation of the consultative committee to ensure an acceptable and effective framework.

“Media is an important pillar of a modern state system. Its role in holding other state institutions accountable to the people is highly significant,” the minister said.

He further said the government would work both as an equal partner in the process and as a coordinator and facilitator on behalf of the state.

Expressing hope for broader cooperation, the minister said local and international development partners, media organisations and other stakeholders would act as partners of the government in the initiative.

Among others, British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke, former Media Commission chairman Kamal Ahmed and Broadcast Journalists Center chairman and Jamuna Television CEO Fahim Ahmed also spoke at the seminar.
