BRAHMANBARIA, May 21: Four construction workers died after entering a septic tank of an under-construction building in Golania Village under Kalikachha Union of Sarail Upazila in Brahmanbaria on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident has left the local area in shock and grief.

The deceased were identified as Arman, 21, Iman Hossain, 35, Hridoy, 32 and Mehedi Hasan, 18.

According to locals, the workers were engaged in construction work at the septic tank of a building owned by Ali Mia. At one stage, two workers inside the tank stopped responding. Later, two more workers entered the tank to rescue them but also became unconscious.

Fire Service personnel were informed and rushed to the spot. They conducted a rescue operation by breaking part of the building structure to access the septic tank. Four bodies were recovered around 5:45pm.

Assistant Director of Brahmanbaria Fire Service Faruk Ahmed said they reached the spot after receiving information and recovered the bodies after a rescue operation.

He said the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed. "It is suspected that they may have died due to electrocution as electrical work was ongoing inside the tank. However, toxic gas exposure is also a possible cause," he added.

Officer-in-Charge of  Sarail Police Station Manzur Kader confirmed the incident and said legal procedures are underway.
