More importantly, it prompted immediate action.
However, the PM's firm decision to suspend officials allegedly responsible for failures in waste removal and to initiate disciplinary proceedings against 6 additional senior officials reflects a commitment to administrative accountability. In many cases in Dhaka, urban problems persist because lapses in service delivery largely go unchecked. By holding top officials responsible for their performance, the government has signaled that inefficiency and negligence will be dealt with a firm hand.
Dhaka, one of the world's most densely populated cities, already faces enormous challenges in terms of waste management, drainage maintenance and Dengue prevention. These issues are closely interconnected. Uncollected waste blocks drainage systems, leading to waterlogging, while stagnant water creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes that spread Dengue.
